Twenty-one brave souls travelled to the untamed wilderness of Pictou Island to fend for themselves and test their wills against nature. Well, maybe not exactly. More like they set up on a beautiful stretch of beach and participated in a number of games and challenges for charity. The Pictou County Progress Club's Survivor Pictou Island is in the bag, and the event can only be seen as a rousing success.
In the lead-up to the event, teams from CKEC, Lawton's Drugs, Scotiabank, The Advocate, GMF Computers, Crombie and Cheap New Era Hats Suntime Enterprises all raised money for the Pictou County Helpline and the Pictou County Early Intervention Association. Each team worked hard before even approaching the island, raising thousands of dollars.
Spirits were high as the castaways reached the island. Smiling faces that would soon be crisped under the sun wholesale hats had little knowledge of the hardships to come.
Up first was a bizarre version of croquet, where the contestants had to hit a golf ball down the beach and into a hula hoop with a bottle tied to their waists. To the untrained eye, the contest looked like a surreal beach-front dance club, as contestants swivelled their hips to get momentum for their swings. Some competitors took an early lead by digging a trench with their feet in front of the ball.
Next came a "re-lei" (get it?) that involved dressing up in five items of island clothing, like grass skirts and bikini tops, then dropping a plastic fish in a bucket several yards away. A member of GMF tried to get by with just wearing five hats, but the eagle-eyed judges weren't having any of it.
The cleverly titled "Fill Your Boot" was next, as contestants had to use water guns to fill a rubber boot with water. The CKEC team showed great innovation, bypassing the whole water gun element and simply filling their mouths with water. The race was tight between Lawton's and CKEC, but a critical miscalculation resulted in the Lawton's boot being overturned.
The day went on and the competition began to heat up as the events became more intricate. In the final events on the island, contestants ingested disgusting foods, shot slingshots at targets, dug for buried treasure, constructed crude fishing lines and caught magnetic plastic fish. GMF took the fishing portion of the event, chalking their win Oakley Sunglass Outlet up to "dumb luck."
The final on-island event would be a test of the contestant's knowledge of Pictou Island. "Do we get points for looking good in our swimsuits?" a vexed Suntime team asked after a few missed questions. Unfortunately, the judges would not allow it.
At this point, the contestants said good-bye to their beautiful island paradise and hopped a ferry back to the mainland. After a chance to get dressed and apply aloe vera to searing sunburns, the teams reconvened at Fibber's for the final event. This contest would separate the Gilligans from the Skippers, if you will.
The first member of a team would have to drag a lobster trap tied to a log to the other side of the lot (blindfolded, mind you). The second member of the team would have to tear a lobster apart with their bare hands. The third member of the team would remove as much meat from the lobster as they could. The team who got the most meat, quickest, would be the winner. Chunks of Cheap NIKE NFL Jerseys China lobster flew in every direction, as panicked participants shouted instructions and encouragement.
When the last lobster part hit the ground and all was said and done, the Lawton's Drug Runners were the overall winners, just edging out the team from CKEC. The Lawton's team was presented with a hand-carved Survivor Pictou Island trophy. Scotiabank was the team that raised the most money, and were rewarded with a beautiful wooden chair. The real winners though, of course, were the Pictou County Helpline and the Early Intervention Association, for whom thousands of dollar were raised. See you on the island next year! www.oakleysunglassol.com
