According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, in 2010, the number of adults under supervision of correctional authorities in the United States was 7.1 million at year-end. This is more than any other country including India, Russia and China. Of these adults, 2,266,800 were in jails or prisons; also more than any other country. The same source reports that between 1980 and 2009, the adult arrest rate for drug possession or use {excluding illegal sales} grew 138%. Hence, of these 2.26 million people in our prisons and jails, approximately 27% are in custody for non-sale drug offenses and about 16% of all inmates suffer from mental health disorders. With respect to the so-called “War on Drugs”, more than 34,000 people have been murdered on the Mexican border in drug related killings since 2007. In the United States, the vast majority of arrests of young people under age 21 are for non-violent drug offenses, often resulting in prolonged incarceration where they are housed in the general adult prison population pending hearings and trials in over-burdened courts. The mass warehousing of people who suffer from the disease of addiction and mental or emotional disorders is immoral and counter-productiveexcept for the privatized prison corporations, government entities and contractors that profit or justify their budgets from incarcerating non-violent drug offenders. The “War on Drugs” is a war on young people, minorities and the poor who cannot acquire sufficient legal representation. Non-violent drug offenders and those with mental health issues must be treated and adjudicated through specialized drug and mental health courts that offer alternatives to incarceration, support, treatment and rehabilitation rather than punishment for profit.

See my site which Jack N Jill politics eventually found and used the information to educate the public during the 2008 election. = bushclintonhurtchildren.blogspot.com/You will read about Amy Goodmans interview with Marian Wright Edelman who spoke about the "cradle to prison pipeline" created during the Bush Clinton Bush regime and how "now" its big business as they made crack cocaine useage a longer term in prison. Many of the people who had crack pushed in their neghborhoods were blacks and latino's. Many whites used regular cocaine. The middle class thought it was good but soon their taxes were increased and now their complaining about the high cost of incarceration. Even my Republican Pa Governor has reduced education funding while leaving prison funding strong. However, this is not just a republican democratic thing they both are to blame. Al Gore was one of the major players in privitization of prisons. Yes you will read all about how cocaine was first brought in across Texas and into Arkansas by air back in the 80's. Much of that profit went to fund presidential elections. in the late 80's 90's and 2000's. Even Hellery Clinton said at the black brown forum during the 2007 - 2008 primaries that she wouldn't make retroactive the reduction in prisons sentences. The supreme court did rule it unconstitutional but she would leave those mostly black and latino people with long sentences for crack verses powder coke in jail. Yes the clintons are not the black presidents they are the white devil. Hey check out jack N jill politics www.jackandjillpolitics.com/ they are a great bunch of people who helped to turn the tide in 2008 as they are mostly black and well black people listened to them but didn't listen to me until they used what i found to help educate them.
